Today FM’s Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show is broadcasting from LA this week to cover the Special Olympics World Games – and this morning they captured a very special moment live on air.
15-year-old Dearbhail Savage is from Mowhan in Co Armagh and is in LA as part of Team Ireland – representing the country in equestrianism.
Dearbhail had already competed in her event and was chatting to Ian Dempsey, with the interview being broadcast live on air back in Ireland.
The young horsewoman was surrounded by supporters, team-mates and family and – midway through the interview – one of them got a tap on the shoulder to tell them Dearbhail had won a gold medal!
There were quite a few damp eyes in commuter cars around Ireland as they heard the screams of joy and celebration.
RADIO GOLD! Dearbhail was waiting to hear during our interview & by the end she had won GOLD! Amazing. @SOIreland pic.twitter.com/EtToAMys7S

Thankfully someone had their phone out to record the visuals as well as the audio – although it went understably wobbly for a few moments with all the jumping around.
