Referee Joe McQuillan came in for a fair amount of criticism following yesterday’s draw between Mayo and Dublin, but should the umpires and Hawk-eye also be under the microscope?
That is certainly the view of some GAA supporters – baffled as to why Bernard Brogan was awarded a point for this effort in the first half of the drawn All-Ireland SFC semi-final
And from another angle.
Many viewers felt it was obviously wide and couldn’t understand why the score detection system Hawk-Eye wasn’t used. The official in charge of Hawk-Eye is supposed to alert the referee if a point is awarded incorrectly.
Gaelic fans were also surprised at the lack of discussion around the point, both during the match itself and on last night’s Sunday Game.
The mayo fans can't be happy, a penalty for foul outside square, a wide point for brogan given... Possible pen not given to o Shea too!

Is it me or was brogan's point not about 2 foot wide there? Nothing said @TheSundayGame ?

@RTEgaa Bernard Brogan point looked wide should have been subject to Hawkeye anyway?

@RTERadio1 did not look like a Brogan point!

It was only one of several incidents that triggered a lot of debate, including an apparent headbutt by Philly McMahon on Aidan O’Shea, and the dubious penalty awarded to Paul Flynn.
This game seems set to be remembered more for the talking points than the football – hopefully the same won’t be true of the replay.
