This footage shows the crashing fall that resulted in Ireland’s top show jumper Bertram Allen breaking his collarbone while competing in Treffen, Austria.
The world No 5 rider is seen aboard his new horse Hector van d’Abdijhoeve, when the grey eight-year-old stumbles through a fence, throwing Allen to the ground.
The Wexford native underwent surgery on Friday in his home country of Germany. His mother Geraldine said afterward: “He’s over the surgery. Good job done, but we’ve no idea of a timeframe for his return to competition.”
Allen will be doing his utmost to be back in time for the final of the Furusiyya Nations Cup Series in Barcelona, Spain, which begins on September 24.
The 20-year-old has proven to be more than a match for his peers, including finishing third in April’s World Cup final, as he continues to show the talent and dedication that garnered him huge success at underage level.
