VAR has had its say in Manchester United vs Arsenal, and it’s the visitors that will be bemoaning its existence.
In a weekend that has been full of VAR drama, which has birthed demands for it to be scrapped by the Premier League, the FA and PGMOL will have been hoping for a seamless officiating performance at Old Trafford.
Referee Paul Tierney was, unfortunately, dragged into the weekend drama within a quarter of an hour, having been advised to go and look at the pitchside monitor to assess if Gabriel Martinelli’s goal was good and proper.
Having watched an alleged foul in the build-up on a loop for some time, Tierney made the decision that, despite the lengthy deliberating, the mistake was clear and obvious and worthy of intervention.
Was it the right decision? Perhaps, but VAR’s existence and the implementation of it by the officials is making our great game worse. We’d be surprised if this is the last time we’re talking about it before the clock strikes 90…
