Referees at the upcoming Club World Cup will now be mic’d up and will explain VAR decisions to the people at home and the entire stadium as part of a new trial.
It can be frustrating for the viewer watching on at home when a VAR decision is made and they don’t understand it. It can be even more frustrating for people in the stadium who don’t have access to instant replays or context from the commentary team.

But this is all set to change.
As part of a new trial at the upcoming Club World Cup, referees will be required to explain VAR decisions to the audience at home and present in the stadium.

This system is already used in the NFL and has been proven to work.
Controversial VAR calls are now part and parcel of the game, and limiting the confusion around them will benefit everyone.
