Ireland second-row Sophie Spence is one of three players nominated for the World Rugby Women’s Player of the Year award.

Spence was named as the Irish Rugby Writers’ Women’s Player of the Year last Tuesday, being commended for her “impressive open field running and ball retention at the line out.”

A key member of Ireland’s 6 Nations winning side, Spence said, “It’s something you can only dream of,” when picking up the Rugby Writers’ award but her week has gone to another level with this announcement.

She will now compete with New Zealand scrum-half Kendra Cocksedge and France captain Gaëlle Mignot for the top individual honour in women’s rugby.

The winner will be announced on November 1st.
