Singer from The Wolfe Tones praises Argentina Football Federation for not taking action over anti-English songs

Brian Warfield of The Wolfe Tones has praised the Argentina Football Association for not taking action against their players after a video emerged of them singing anti-English songs in the dressing room.

The Argentina players celebrated their semi-final victory against Croatia with a sing song in the dressing room. One of the songs possessed lyrics which were deemed offensive to the English.

They received a fair amount of criticism after the footage was released, but not from their governing body, the Argentina Football Association.

The lyrics were related to the Falklands War in 1982, where Argentina and Britain went to battle against each other.

A similar incident occurred with the Irish Women’s team recently, they were filmed singing an IRA song in the dressing room after they had secured qualification for the World Cup.

Warfield has praised the Argentina FA for sticking behind their players and claimed that this is what the FAI should have done.

“You notice the way the Argentinian officials stood up for their footballers and they didn’t back down or apologise or make any reference to anything – that is what the FAI should’ve done.” he told the Irish Mirror.

“They should’ve stood up for them and said it was an Irish song, it was jubilation, it is known by everybody in Ireland, half the world likes to sing it, so why couldn’t the girls sing it in celebration.

“The only reason why they couldn’t sing was because some cranky unionist politician got on and started complaining about it.

“They had no right to complain about anything because they are forcing people to wear poppies during football matches, forcing people to wear poppies on television. It’s bullying across every media in the UK and across Northern Ireland, so I don’t think they have anything to complain about…

“Why can’t the FAI stand up like Argentina did and say ‘look, that’s our culture, that’s our people’.

They’re standing their ground and rightly so, like the FAI should’ve done.”
