On This Day: Olivier Giroud scores SPECTACULAR goal for Chelsea

Olivier Giroud scored a stunning overhead kick on this day two years ago for Chelsea on their way to the Champions League final.

2021 was the year that saw Chelsea win the competition for the second time in their history as they cruised through the knockout stages and today marks two years since one of the club’s most iconic goals was scored.

In their last 16 first leg against Atletico Madrid, the Blues dominated at the Wanda Metropolitano with 64% possession, limiting their opponents to just six shots with none coming on target and in the 68th minute of the match, their control in the game was rewarded with a goal.

Marcos Alonso’s low cross towards the edge of the box was flicked up in the air by Giroud and then again by Mario Hermoso, before the Frenchman positioned himself to launch a stunning effort past Jan Oblak in the Atletico goal.

Giroud was in fact in an offside position before his shot, but because Hermoso intentionally played the ball beforehand, the striker’s effort was allowed to stand.

The goal is one Blues fans still talk about today, as it went a long way to securing an even more dominant win in the second leg by two goals to nil.

It’s just such a shame that there were no supporters in the stadium to witness it, but it’s a goal that won’t be forgotten in a hurry.
