Egan started his footballing career at Cork city’s Greenwood FC when he was just 7 years old and makes it back there whenever he can.

The Sheffield United man set up an academy for children aged 5 to 10, who train on a Monday evening from 6pm-7pm, with around 120 kids attending every week.

Club Chairman Kieran McCoy told Cork Beo: “I arrived down to the academy and there he was training the under-7s team.

“I had no idea he was coming – training runs from 6 to 7 and he was still there at half past 7 taking pictures and signing autographs for the kids.

“John will always pop down to the club whenever he is at home in Cork,” he added.
