Paul Gascoigne was a handful on and off of the pitch.

The England legend is one of the greatest players the country has ever produced but with a lot of geniuses he often found himself in trouble.

‘Gazza’ had promised Sir Alex Ferguson that he would sign for Manchester United. Ferguson duly went on holiday to Malta, expecting to sign Gascoigne, but during his holiday, he received the news that Gascoigne had signed for Tottenham Hotspur, for a then record British fee of £2.2 million.

Many fans and pundits alike wondered if working with Sir Alex Ferguson would have reigned in the former Lazio star’s more mischievous nature and now he has quite hilariously put that thought to bed.

When asked this on the Rest Is Football podcast he gave a brilliant response.

He said: “People always say would it have been different if he signed for Manchester United, kept us under control, well, Eric Cantona two footed someone in the neck in the stands. Wayne Rooney went with a granny and Ryan Giggs went with his brother’s wife… so I might have fitted in.’

This left Alan Shearer, Gary Lineker and Micah Richards in stitches.
