Former UFC referee John McCarthy has shockingly admitted that he expects the world-famous MMA promotion to axe Tony ‘El Cucuy’ Ferguson in light of the star’s two recent defeats.

Ferguson, 36, currently 25-5, went on an absolute tear from 2013 to 2020 where he battered everyone and everything to get in his way en-route to the Lightweight title.

Sadly, in April 2020, the 36-year-old was denied a title match-up against champion Khabib Nurmagomedov for a fifth time after a series of events spanning across five-years continually prevented the pair from ever facing off.

El Cucuy’s monumental run eventually came to an end in May 2020 when he lost a number one contenders fight to Justin ‘The Highlight’ Gaethje before going on to lose against Charles Oliveira more recently at UFC 256.

Ferguson’s fall from grace has sparked speculation surrounding the future of the 155lb fan-favourite as former octagon referee McCarthy thinks his time in the big leagues could be up.

Speaking on his podcast ‘Weighing-In’, McCarthy, as quoted by GiveMeSport said: “I think they’re going to cut him [Ferguson].

“I could be wrong about that but the reason I say it is first off, Tony has always had an adversarial relationship with certain people within the UFC.

“He’s felt like he’s been held back, cheated in certain things. And so you have that. That’s OK, you can say those things when you’re winning.

“But now you take a look at his last two performances — the Justin Gaethje fight, he fought his ass off but he got beat badly. And now this one, he got beat badly.

“You look at your lightweights and you go, ‘Alright, is Tony Ferguson going to be fighting for the title?’ That ain’t going to happen.

“You would figure he would have to win somewhere between four or five fights in a row against top talent and that’s probably not going to happen.”
