A former Premier League referee has given his opinion on Manchester United’s controversial first goal in the Manchester derby on Saturday.
Manchester United have shown just how far they’ve come since Erik ten Hag took over when they beat bitter rivals, Manchester City on Saturday.
Jack Grealish opened the scoring in the 53rd minute before Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford won the game for the Red Devils. It was back-and-forth fame but wasn’t without controversy.

For Manchester United’s equalizing goal, Rashford was offside when he was played in behind the City defense. However, the winger did not touch the ball before Fernandes scored so the initial offside was overruled by the referee.
@MarcusRashford wanted to go right but when the ball was placed to his left, he changed direction and went with the ball while SHIELDING from CITY defenders and that’s not OFFSIDE! pic.twitter.com/4qGxWdWvzu

There was outrage from City fans who believed that he was interfering with play and Ten Hag even admitted that he would’ve felt hard done by if he was in Pep Guardiola’s shoes.
However, former Premier League referee, Chris Foy wrote in his Daily Mail column that the right decision was made.
“It’s no surprise that opinions are divided over Manchester United’s equaliser but I can see absolutely no reason why the goal should not have stood,” he wrote.
“Assistant Darren Cann raised his flag after Bruno Fernandes put the ball in the net, because Marcus Rashford had been in an offside position when the ball was played through.
“Referee Stuart Attwell consulted Cann and between them they agreed that Rashford had not touched the ball nor had any impact on a City player.
“The offside law, Law 11, says a player can be penalised if he’s interfering with an opponent by making an obvious action ‘which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball.'”
