What made it an even harder pill to swallow for Spurs fans was that the club captain promised that he would not leave.
Campbell has now revealed that 20 years later, he is still subjected to jeers and chants.
āItās almost as though people have forgotten how to be human,ā he toldĀ The Guardian.
āWishing and hoping that someone is going to die? And youāre going to be having a party? What world are we living in?
āI know football has its tribalism but if no one around feels that this is unacceptable, well, weāre in a really sorry place.
āWe are talking about nearly a quarter of a century [since the transfer],ā he added.
āWhere are we going as human beings if someone cannot move on?
āI donāt think people realise how hurtful the hate and vitriol is to me. I get the situation but itās been such a long time.ā
