According to Spanish sports outlet Mundo Deportivo, Everton signed Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez for absolutely nothing.
Reports initially indicated that Rodriquez signed for £22million but Everton’s director of football Marcel Brands has revealed that the deal didn’t cost Everton a single penny.
During the clubs Annual General Meeting Brands said: “It was one of the most difficult and weirdest transfer windows ever. The pandemic was clearly involved in this transfer window.”
The weirdest thing about Rodriguez’ transfer is that he still had an entire year left on his Real Madrid contract but somehow The Toffees managed to sign the playmaker for free.
Rodriguez made an immediate impact at Everton scoring three goals and dishing out three assists in his opening five games.
Unfortunately, the 29-year-old suffered an injury in December but thankfully he has returned and is back in the Everton team and since the start of the new year, he’s been in good form.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men currently sit fifth in the Premier League and are still hopeful of a top four finish as they only sit behind Manchester City and Leicester on goal difference.
