Manchester United’s Edinson Cavani has been banned for three games and fined £100,000 for a racist social media post he published back in November.
Cavani was under investigation following the publishing of the offensive post and has been found guilty of misconduct by the FA.
The charge came after the 33-year-old responded to a congratulatory message sent to him by a friend on instagram following his winner against Southampton to which he responded with the words “Gracias n******”.
Following the post there was an instant backlash and the former PSG striker immediately deleted the post and apologised for his actions, saying: “The message I posted after the game on Sunday was intended as an affectionate greeting to a friend, thanking him for his congratulations after the game.”
The United striker has chosen not to challenge the charge and will consequently miss United’s upcoming games against Aston Villa, Manchester City and Watford.
The Uruguayan has also been ordered to complete face-to-face education after it was deemed his post was insulting, abusive, improper and brought the game into disrepute.
United have asked the FA to use the £100,000 fine as funding for anti-racisim projects and initiatives.
