Busy day of comeptition at National Track and Field Championships in Santry

The GloHealth National Track and Field Championships started this afternoon at Morton Stadium in Santry.

It is a two day event with plenty of interest for sports viewers, particularly with some entrants in search of qualifying time for the World Championships.

One of these is Sligo athlete Mary Cullen, who went into the women’s 5,000m in search of a world qualifying time of 15:20.

She didn’t hit the necessary time, but won the race in a time of 16.07.

Earlier, Sara Treacy won the 3000m steeplechase in a time of 9.09, having led from the start.

There was a comfortable victory for defending champion Mark English in heat 1 of the 800m, with the final tomorrow.

Mark Christie showed a late burst of speed to 10,000m in 29.52 with long time leader Mick Clohisey second and Ryan Creech third.
