Atletico Madrid have terminated Diego Costa’s contract due to ‘personal reasons’

Atletico Madrid have revealed that they have terminated the contract of Diego Costa six months before the players current deal was set to expire.

According to Marca, Costa approached Atletico Madrid and asked to be released from his contract six months early for personal reasons.

Costa’s current deal with the La Liga leaders was due to expire in June 2021 and the termination of his deal makes him free to negotiate with clubs as soon as January 1st.

The club released a statement confirmed the news saying: “Atlético de Madrid and Diego Costa have reached an agreement for the termination of the striker’s contract, which was to end on June 30, 2021,”

“The striker asked to leave the club for personal reasons a few days ago and on Tuesday signed the termination of his contract.

“The club thanks Diego Costa for his dedication during these years and wishes him well in the next stage of his professional career.”

Costa re-joined Atletico in January 2018 for £54 million after waiting for almost six months at Stamford Bridge for the deal to go through.

Since reconnecting with his former club Costa has only managed to score 19 goals in 81 games and has only started two games so far this season with a further five appearances from the bench.

It was reported by Goal that Atletico had wanted to sell the Brazilian born Spain international earlier in the season but no clubs showed interest.
