Mesut Ozil opens up about his move from Arsenal to Fenerbahce in detailed open letter on Twitter

Former Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has finally lifted the lid on how he feels after he decided to join Fenerbahce following a period of exile at the Emirates.

Ozil has finally given his honest side of the story in the form of a few tweets which he has written in Turkish.

In his first tweet the midfielder said: ‘About 20-25 years ago, I was an immigrant Turkish kid who was running after the soccer ball with the Fenerbahce shirt with the number 10 Jay Jay Okocha written on his back in the streets of Gelsenkirchen, thankfully, it was my honor to wear this jersey that I have been dreaming of for many years.

He goes on to say in a second tweet of the thread: ‘I mutually agreed and terminated my contract with the Arsenal team and signed a 3.5-year contract with Fenerbahçe, which I have been a strong fan of since childhood.

He then speaks of the future by saying: ‘Now is the time for me to make a new start with Fenerbahçe, the team of my childhood, in the extraordinary city of Istanbul, which Napoleon Bonaparte said if the world were a country, its capital would be this city.

Ozil continues by saying: ‘I would like to express my gratitude to our president, Mr. Ali Koç and the Board of Directors, to our Sportive Director Emre Belözoğlu and to our teacher Erol Bulut for their trust in me, which led to this new beginning in my career and life.

Ozil finished up by saying: Also, since the day we met, my dear brother Acun Ilıcalı, who has always supported me for many years, has always been with me on my good day and my bad day, and has worked hard to make this transfer possible.

‘I would like to express my endless thanks to my beloved mother Gülizar Özil, who worked day and night for us in our childhood, my dear wife Amine, who was always with me, and my dear daughter Eda.

‘Finally, since the moment I got on the plane from London, I would like to thank the great Fenerbahçe fans, who made me feel their great and incredible support every second that would surprise me like everyone else.

‘And I promise I will struggle until the last drop of my term in order to reward this support and belief and not to embarrass you. I hope happy days all together.

Mesut Ozil’

Ozil’s contract was due to expire in the summer and Arsenal were desperate to get him off their wage bill after the World Cup winner signed a monster deal worth £350,000-a-week in Arsene Wenger’s final season.

Ozil moved to Arsenal in 2013 from Real Madrid for a then club record £42.5m and has gone on to make 254 appearances and scoring 44 goals.
