Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring with a penalty and Germany appeared to be heading towards a routine victory. But, Ritsu Doan equalised in the 75th minute before former Arsenal player Takumu Asano scored the winner.

Was the defeat karma for Antonio Rudiger, who earlier mocked Asano with his Usain Bolt impression? Only the World Cup gods are able to answer that. But the shock defeat adds more drama to an already fantastic tournament which has also seen Saudi Arabia upset Argentina. Spain are up next for the Germans, who are now at risk of dropping out of the competition in the group stage.

A winter World Cup has been controversial, but it is certainly leading to plenty of drama.
